German Book Prize Lit. Ruhr festival literary awards German literature book shortlist

The 2026 German Book Prize shortlist has been announced, featuring six finalists: Shida Bazyar (Die Lücken), Franziska Gänsler (Orca), Valeria Gordeev (Die Zikade entschlüpft ihrer goldglänzenden Hülle), Elias Hirschl (Schleifen), Peggy Mädler (Selbstregulierung des Herzens), and Dana Vowinckel (Anton und Alma). The winner will be revealed on October 5 at the Frankfurt Book Fair. The prize includes 25,000 euros for the winner and 2,500 euros for each finalist.

Separately, the Lit. Ruhr festival is scheduled for early October in the Ruhr region, including Essen, Bochum, Gelsenkirchen, and Oberhausen. The festival will host 69 events, featuring prominent figures such as former Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck, who will present a non-fiction book on the Arctic and the climate crisis, and bestselling author Dörte Hansen.
