German bridge projects in Flensburg and Leipzig set for major reconstruction

In Flensburg, inspections of the B200 bridge revealed extensive corrosion of internal reinforcement, prompting the state road authority to order a complete replacement. The new bridge is planned to take three to five years to build at an estimated cost of €10‑15 million, with traffic limited to a single lane and a speed reduction to 70 km/h from the end of July.

In Leipzig, the newly completed Karlbrücke over the Weiße Elster features a 17.2‑metre steel and reinforced‑concrete structure, seven metres wider than its predecessor, and includes pedestrian and cycle paths on both sides. The pylon‑free design allows the river to flow unhindered during floods. The project also introduced new traffic measures, such as a pedestrian crossing at Industriestraße/Holbeinstraße, a 30 km/h speed limit in the surrounding area, and upgrades to water‑works infrastructure.

Both projects aim to improve safety, traffic flow, and multimodal connectivity in their respective regions.
