German Bundeswehr expands recruitment outreach with YouTube series and school visits
The German Ministry of Defence announced the launch of a new YouTube series titled “Generation Wehrdienst” to showcase the experiences of young men and women during the modernised basic training. Three seasons are planned for release between early July and November, with episodes broadcast on YouTube and Joyn and snippets posted on TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat and Reddit. The series is intended to mirror contemporary streaming aesthetics and give a candid look at arrival, uniforming, formal service, field training and bivouac, featuring comments from recruits, families and instructors.
In parallel, the Bundeswehr has markedly increased its presence in schools and vocational schools, reporting 3,790 public appearances in the first half of 2026—well above the 5,617 visits recorded the previous year. The outreach is part of a drive to raise enlistment numbers following the introduction of the new conscription system on 1 January 2026. Lawmakers from the Left Party have criticised the effort as a “record‑level militarisation” of classrooms, warning against covert recruitment of minors.
