Konrad Beikircher, 80, German Cabaret Star Dies; WDR Alters Broadcast Schedule
Cabaret veteran Konrad Beikircher died at age 80 on 29 July 2026. Born on 22 December 1945 in Bruneck, South Tyrol, he later studied in Vienna and Bonn before spending 15 years as a prison psychologist. From 1986 onward he became a celebrated Rhein‑Land cabaretist, author and musician, known for his “Rheinische Trilogie” and eleven stage programmes produced between 1991 and 2011. He received the Rheinische Kulturpreis in 2005, the Köln‑Literatur‑Preis in 2006, the Friedestrompreis in 2002 and the Bundesverdienstkreuz 1st Class in 2012.
The Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR) responded with an immediate programme change. The travel show “Travel like a local” was dropped and replaced at 22:15 on 29 July by the hour‑long portrait “Konrad Johann Aloysia Beikircher – Fast ein Selbstportrait”. On WDR 5, a tribute titled “Der rheinische Zauberer” aired from 21:03 to 22:00 the same evening, followed by a broadcast of his final solo programme “Arrivederci” on 1 August (15:03–17:00). Political figures reacted: North‑Rhine‑Westphalia Minister‑President Hendrik Wüst praised his embodiment of the Rhein‑Land spirit, and Cologne Mayor Torsten Burmester expressed condolences. WDR programme director Ingmar Cario said, “Niemand beobachtete den ‚Rheinländer an sich‘ so genau, persiflierte ihn so liebevoll wie er.”
