Konrad Beikircher death and broadcast tributes

Cabaret veteran Konrad Beikircher died at age 80 on 29 July 2026. Born in South Tyrol in 1945, he studied musicology and psychology, worked as a prison psychologist, and switched to cabaret at 39, becoming a celebrated figure for the Rhineland dialect and culture. His career included the “Rheinische Trilogie” and eleven stage programmes between 1991 and 2011, earning awards such as the Rheinische Kulturpreis, Köln‑Literatur‑Preis, Friedestrompreis and the Bundesverdienstkreuz 1st Class.

The Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR) responded immediately, dropping the travel show “Travel like a local” and airing an hour‑long portrait “Konrad Johann Aloysia Beikircher – Fast ein Selbstportrait” at 22:15 on the day of his death. WDR 5 broadcast a tribute “Der rheinische Zauberer” from 21:03 to 22:00, followed by a rebroadcast of his final solo programme “Arrivederci” on 1 August. Political figures, including North‑Rhine‑Westphalia Minister‑President Hendrik Wüst and Cologne Mayor Torsten Burmester, expressed condolences and praised his embodiment of the Rhein‑Land spirit.
