Austria tourism shows growth in overnight stays amid economic pressure

Austria's tourism sector is experiencing a complex period in 2026. Statistics Austria reports an increase in overnight stays during the summer season, with 41.87 million recorded between May and July, a 3.2 percent rise compared to the previous year. This growth is largely driven by international visitors, particularly from Germany. In the camping segment, approximately 2.9 million overnight stays were recorded in the first half of the year, a 3.6 percent decrease from the previous year's record, though trends show a rise in year-round camping, specifically in February.

Despite rising numbers, industry experts and the Austrian Hotel Association (ÖHV) warn of significant economic pressure. While nominal revenues and arrivals have increased, many businesses face shrinking margins due to high labor and energy costs, bureaucracy, and investment pressures.

In the broader European market, the Caravan Salon Düsseldorf is set to host over 750 exhibitors, showcasing new trends such as off-road vehicles and rooftop tents. Companies like Palazzina Sports & Building are also presenting modular solutions for camping infrastructure, including sanitary facilities and wellness modules, to meet evolving industry needs.
