German cancer researchers report promising vaccine results for aggressive brain tumors

A seven‑year follow‑up of a therapeutic vaccine for high‑grade astrocytoma was published in Nature. The vaccine, developed by scientists at the German Cancer Research Center, the University Medical Center Mannheim and the University Hospital Heidelberg, targets the IDH1 mutation found in aggressive gliomas. In the initial study, 33 patients received the vaccine in addition to standard chemo‑radiotherapy. After eight years, 66 % of participants were still alive and the tumor had not returned in 42 % of cases.

The lead author, Michael Platten, director of neurology at the University Hospital Mannheim, described the findings as “cautiously optimistic,” while Ulrich Herrlinger, director of neuro‑oncology at the University Hospital Bonn, warned that the small sample size limits definitive conclusions. A larger, randomized trial with more than 200 patients is planned to start in March 2027 to further assess safety and efficacy.
