German industry calls for urgent bureaucracy and data protection reforms
German businesses and industry associations are calling for urgent reforms to combat rising bureaucracy and regulatory burdens. A representative study by the digital association Bitkom reveals that 90 percent of surveyed companies demand a fundamental reform of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The study highlights that 92 percent of businesses experience high or very high administrative workloads due to data protection, which many claim hinders digitalization and the implementation of artificial intelligence.
Beyond data privacy, companies are struggling with various European Union regulations, such as the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), which increases documentation requirements. Industry leaders and chambers of commerce (IHK) have noted that these complex requirements drain resources and create legal uncertainty, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises.
Other economic challenges mentioned include a shortage of skilled workers, with approximately 17,000 apprenticeship positions remaining vacant in Baden-Württemberg, and high energy and labor costs. While some regional economic stabilization has been observed, the overall sentiment remains cautious due to the heavy administrative and financial pressures facing the German industrial sector.
