Christian Schuchardt urges billions for German municipal climate‑adaptation
Christian Schuchardt, chief executive of the Deutscher Städtetag, called on the German federal and state governments to markedly increase funding for municipal climate‑adaptation measures, saying the task requires "billions of euros" nationwide. He warned that existing federal and state programmes are insufficient for comprehensive implementation and that cities cannot finance the needed heat‑protection projects on their own. Schuchardt highlighted specific measures such as de‑sealing surfaces, expanding urban green spaces and creating water‑retention areas. The demand coincides with reports of nearly 10,000 heat‑related deaths in Germany since the start of 2026 and with Greens leader Franziska Brantner urging the Climate and Transformation Fund to finance heat‑protection in schools, care facilities and urban green areas. Regional responses include Saarland Environment Minister Petra Berg’s €2.5 million programme for municipal climate‑adaptation, Grevenbroich’s proposal for publicly accessible “cool rooms”, and Mannheim’s heat‑island analysis showing one‑fifth of its built area severely overheated. The Städtetag stresses that sustained, plan‑based co‑financing by federal and state authorities is essential to protect vulnerable populations and to meet the growing frequency of extreme heat events.
