German cities expand housing through new residential projects

Various German cities are advancing residential development projects to address housing needs. In Kiel, the Kieler Wohnungsgesellschaft (KiWoG) is creating 42 new subsidized apartments in Wellsee and Neumühlen-Dietrichsdorf. These units, located at Julius-Leber-Straße and Groß Ebbenkamp, are intended for families, single parents, and individuals requiring barrier-free access, with rents set at 6.80 euros per square meter. A further project in Adelheidstraße aims to provide 100 apartments, 70 of which will be socially subsidized.

In Schwerin, several large-scale residential quarters are being planned to facilitate urban growth. Proposed developments include approximately 1,000 new homes in the Warnitz field and up to 600 units on a former furniture factory site in Lewenberg. Additionally, a new project is planned near Lankow Lake on the site of a former radiology clinic. While some of these projects are in the planning stages, others have already secured building rights, even as statistics indicate over 3,400 vacant apartments currently exist in the state capital.
