German cities face fiscal crisis and drone security threats

Burkhard Jung, President of the Association of German Cities and Mayor of Leipzig, has warned of a dramatic financial crisis facing German municipalities. He stated that the current fiscal situation is unprecedented in the country and expressed concern that if the federal government does not make concessions during autumn budget negotiations, social and political stability could be threatened.

Jung also addressed security concerns following a professional drone incident at Leipzig/Halle Airport involving explosives. He noted that current state technology is struggling to keep pace with such threats, describing a technological arms race. While a nationwide defense shield for critical infrastructure is financially unfeasible, Jung emphasized the urgent need for significant investment to secure urban areas.
