German cities host action days for national Day of the Homeless

On September 11, 2026, several German cities will participate in the national Day of the Homeless through various action days designed to provide support and foster connections between homeless individuals and housing resources.

In Halle (Saale), the city and the alliance ‘Wohnungslosigkeit überwinden’ (Overcoming Homelessness) are hosting events at the Ulrichskirche and the Marktplatz. The program includes lectures on the ‘Housing First’ model, discussions on the psychological and addiction-related aspects of homelessness, and a ‘Market of Opportunities’ where various institutions will present prevention, counseling, and low-threshold aid services.

In Mönchengladbach, the event ‘Mönchengladbach öffnet Türen’ (Mönchengladbach Opens Doors) will take place at the Platz der Republik. Organized by local homelessness and addiction aid services alongside the city and Jobcenter, the day aims to reduce prejudice and facilitate access to permanent housing. A key feature is ‘housing speed-dating,’ which allows private landlords and apartment seekers to meet directly. The event also includes moderated discussions with experts and individuals with lived experience to explore successful paths back to independent living.
