National Day of the Homeless in Germany

On September 11, 2026, various German cities are scheduled to observe the national Day of the Homeless through organized events aimed at providing support, fostering dialogue, and connecting individuals with housing resources.

In Leipzig, the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Recht auf Wohnen is hosting an event at Richard-Wagner-Platz featuring music, art exhibitions by homeless individuals, and communal dining. The Leipzig Social Office will provide information on assistance, and organizers are requesting donations of sleeping bags for emergency housing services.

In Halle (Saale), the city and the alliance ‘Wohnungslosigkeit überwinden’ (Overcoming Homelessness) are hosting events at the Ulrichskirche and the Marktplatz. The program includes lectures on the ‘Housing First’ model, discussions on psychological and addiction-related aspects of homelessness, and a ‘Market of Opportunities’ to present counseling and prevention services.

In Mönchengladbach, the ‘Mönchengladbach öffnet Türen’ event at the Platz der Republik will feature ‘housing speed-dating’ to connect private landlords with apartment seekers, alongside discussions involving experts and individuals with lived experience.

During the observance, social organizations are also highlighting systemic barriers to aid. In Saxony, Diakonie Sachsen reported that its emergency housing services advised 3,575 people in 2025, with nearly half already homeless. Officials criticized bureaucratic and digital hurdles, such as complex application processes and technical issues like two-factor authentication, which can delay essential benefits. In Duisburg, organizations including the Diakoniewerk Duisburg and the Ökumenische Bahnhofsmission held awareness events, noting that State Statistical Office of NRW data indicated 2,880 homeless individuals were accommodated in the city on the reporting date.
