German cities pursue urban greening and climate adaptation

Municipalities in Germany are pursuing various urban greening and climate adaptation strategies. In Wolfenbüttel, the city administration has proposed a plan to increase greenery in front of the historic Zeughaus. The project involves replacing approximately 160 square meters of pavement with three planting beds containing six lime trees and various perennials. The initiative aims to provide more shade, mitigate heat, and allow rainwater to soak into the ground. If approved by local political committees, implementation is planned for the second half of 2027, with an estimated cost of 95,000 euros.

In Bremen, the Green Party is debating a motion to transform the city into a ‘sponge city’ to better defend against heavy rain and flooding. The proposal calls for the removal of asphalt and paving in favor of lawns and flower beds to improve water absorption. Additionally, the party's platform includes modernizing dikes, expanding public transport, and advocating for ticket-free transit to enhance climate protection and urban livability.
