German city libraries attract more visitors and expand community programs

The Hünfeld municipal library reported a rise in active readers to 1,773 and media loans to 82,781, with 32,875 visitors in the past year. Around 90 free events—including readings, a literature circle and a picture‑book cinema—helped it become the most visited cultural venue in the town, especially among children and teenagers.

In Karlsruhe’s Neureut district, the local library handles nearly 100,000 media loans annually and serves many under‑age users. It offers a wide range of materials, from books and comics to games and language courses, and provides free events and online ordering with delivery within two to three days. Both libraries are highlighted as key spaces for social participation, cultural education and community interaction.
