German libraries expand services & reading festivals

Entities: Bruchsal · Sterkrader Lesesommer · Literaturhaus Oberhausen · Stadtbibliothek Bruchsal · Oberhausen

Overview

In May and June 2026 German municipal libraries broadened community outreach. Bad Honnef hosted a police‑author reading, Volkach ran a “Familien‑Literat(o)ur” bus to the Frankfurt Book Fair, and Halle (Saale) celebrated its new Süd‑branch with plant swaps and a bounce house. Erkrath expanded early‑childhood reading groups, Frankenthal introduced a “Lesekids Spaziergang” walk‑and‑read programme, and Leipzig’s Grünau district marked 50 years of its libraries with workshops and exhibitions. Ludwigshafen neighbourhood libraries organised book‑flea markets.

June saw themed reading evenings in Rinteln and Landau, a digital‑skills series “Ich digital live!” in Baden‑Baden, and statewide Lesesommer reading events in Ludwigshafen, Speyer and Wörth, including author talks and a prize stay at Europa‑Park. Summer reading clubs launched in Gütersloh, Zeulenroda‑Triebes, Riesa, Werne, Freinsheim, Oberhausen and Bruchsal, offering stamp‑based challenges, creative workshops and final award ceremonies.

July added 3D‑printing services in Gladbeck and Troisdorf, a free clothing‑swap in Berlin‑Spandau, and a renovated Hemau library with new furnishings. Holzminden reopened with expanded board‑game space, while Troisdorf continued supervised Nintendo‑Switch gaming afternoons for digital‑media literacy. The Bookstock Festival in Munich (23‑24 Oct) will showcase international best‑selling authors alongside German writers. Ongoing reading festivals continued in Koblenz, Bayreuth, Oberhausen and Bruchsal, and the statewide Buchsommer Sachsen programme engaged up to 10 000 students. Across the country, libraries are increasingly positioned as cultural hubs offering diverse programmes, digital services and community events.
