German coach Tonda Eckert, 33, who leads FC Southampton, disclosed that he received death threats following the club’s espionage scandal. The scandal involved Southampton’s staff filming a rival’s training sessions, a breach of English Football League (EFL) rules. The EFL responded by excluding Southampton from the Championship play‑offs, docking four points for the 2026/27 season, and opening a disciplinary case. The Football Association (FA) has also charged Eckert, who could face a personal suspension. Eckert said police advised him to stop driving and sit in the back seat of his car, and he endured sleepless nights and constant anxiety. He accepted full responsibility, stating the decision to authorize the spying was wrong, and noted support from other coaches across Europe.
