German Construction Sector Shows Mixed May 2026 Trends

Germany’s main construction industry recorded a modest nominal revenue rise of 2.4% in May 2026, though real terms fell 2.1% after inflation. Order intake increased 4.5% (real +3.5%).

Residential construction lagged, with orders dropping 1.9% despite a 2.7% revenue gain, reflecting financing constraints and uncertain federal funding. In contrast, public‑sector projects drove a strong 22.7% nominal surge in order intake, up 7.2% since the start of the year, largely from a few large contracts.

Industry head Felix Pakleppa warned that the overall outlook remains fragile, citing difficult financing conditions, limited investment confidence, and upcoming reductions in federal housing subsidies for 2027.
