German consumer groups propose nationwide time-based transit tickets
Consumer protection groups in Germany are calling for a nationwide, standardized pricing model for public transport to replace the current complex system of regional zones and varying tariffs. The Federation of German Consumer Organisations (vzbv) proposes a simplified model based solely on travel duration rather than distance or zones.
The proposed system would consist of only five ticket types: 15 minutes, 30 minutes, 60 minutes, 120 minutes, and 24 hours. Proponents argue this would make bus and train travel more intuitive for occasional users, providing a more attractive alternative to cars during periods of rising fuel prices.
However, transport companies have expressed concerns regarding this proposal. The Association of German Transport Companies (VDV) emphasizes the need for better connections and more frequent services, while noting that regional service offerings vary significantly, making a uniform nationwide system difficult to implement.
