Public transport tariff changes in Germany and Switzerland

Overview

In Germany, consumer protection groups are advocating for a standardized, nationwide public transport pricing model to replace the existing complex system of regional zones and ticket types. The Federation of German Consumer Organisations (vzbv) has proposed a time-based system featuring only five ticket options: 15, 30, 60, 120 minutes, and 24 hours. Proponents suggest this would make transit more intuitive for occasional travelers, potentially offering an alternative to driving as fuel prices rise.

In response to the proposal, the Association of German Transport Companies (VDV) has raised concerns, noting that significant variations in regional service offerings could make a uniform nationwide system difficult to implement. The VDV emphasized that improving connections and service frequency remains a priority.

Separately, price adjustments are scheduled in specific regions. In Berlin and Brandenburg, the Verkehrsverbund Berlin-Brandenburg (VBB) announced that while the standard Berlin AB single ticket will stay at 4 euros, other fares—including short-distance trips and 24-hour passes—will increase by an average of 3.72 percent starting January 1, 2027. In Switzerland, the Zurich Transport Network (ZVV) approved an average price increase of 2.7 percent for December 2026 to cover rising operational and maintenance costs, which includes removing multi-trip ticket discounts.
