German corporations report record profits amid projected wage growth
Major German companies in the DAX index reported record-breaking revenues and profits for the second quarter of 2026. According to an analysis by EY, earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) for the 40 largest companies rose by 16 percent year-on-year to 52.6 billion euros, while total revenue reached approximately 463 billion euros.
Leading profit contributors include Deutsche Telekom with 6.9 billion euros, Allianz with 4.9 billion euros, Volkswagen with 3.5 billion euros, and Siemens with 3.4 billion euros. Growth is largely driven by sectors benefiting from global trends, such as the military industry, artificial intelligence, and data centers. Conversely, the automotive sector saw declines, with BMW reporting a 39 percent drop in profit.
On the labor front, more than 15 million employees in Germany are expected to benefit from wage increases. Projections from the WSI Wage Archive suggest that nominal wages could rise by an average of 3.1 percent in 2026. After adjusting for an inflation rate of approximately 2.4 percent in the first half of the year, real wages are forecasted to increase by 0.7 percent, potentially boosting consumer purchasing power.
