German court rejects AfD candidate Stephan Bothe's bid for election admission

The Administrative Court of Lüneburg has rejected an urgent application by Stephan Bothe, a deputy state chairman of the AfD in Lower Saxony, to be admitted as a candidate for the district administrator election in Lüneburg.

Bothe's candidacy was previously rejected by the district election committee with a 6-to-1 vote. The committee cited doubts regarding his commitment to the free democratic basic order, a legal requirement for candidates. This assessment followed a review by the Lower Saxony Ministry of the Interior involving findings from the Office for the Protection of the Constitution.

Bothe argued that his exclusion violated his right to stand for election and that legal protection must be granted before the election on September 13, 2026, to be effective. However, the court ruled the application inadmissible, noting that under the Lower Saxony Municipal Election Act, decisions regarding election procedures are generally subject to review through an election scrutiny process after the vote has taken place, rather than through urgent injunctions before the election.
