German crafts sector warns of vocational training risks due to declining student skills

The German crafts sector is warning that declining educational standards, highlighted by recent PISA study results, are jeopardizing the successful entry of young people into vocational training. The study indicates that German students' competencies in mathematics, reading, and science have reached historically low levels, with approximately one-third of 15-year-olds lacking basic skills in math and reading.

Representatives from the Handwerkskammer für Unterfranken and the Zentralverband des Deutschen Handwerks noted that businesses have observed these deficiencies for years. Key issues include a lack of mathematical and linguistic foundations necessary for technical calculations and customer communication, as well as increasing psychological burdens among youth.

To mitigate these challenges, industry leaders are calling on federal and state governments to maintain and stabilize proven support programs. They emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts between companies and vocational schools to bridge learning gaps and ensure a reliable foundation for professional development.
