German Data Center Industry Confronts Heat Stress and Adapts Hyperscale Practices

Hyperscale data‑center concepts such as liquid cooling, high power density and standardized operating models are influencing German colocation providers, but they cannot be copied wholesale. The key distinction lies in ownership and control: hyperscale sites serve a single operator, while colocation facilities must support multiple tenants with varied hardware, service‑level agreements and compliance needs. Providers are therefore evaluating which elements—busbar power distribution, open‑rack designs, advanced monitoring—can be integrated without compromising fire safety, maintenance or regulatory requirements.

At the same time, record temperatures are straining the sector. Installed capacity in Germany has more than doubled since 2010 to over 2,730 MW in 2024, and the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs projects more than 4,800 MW by 2030 under the 2026 national data‑center strategy. Climate‑related risks are rising as AI workloads increase heat output, creating a “data heat‑island” effect that can raise local temperatures by up to 9 °C. An analysis estimates that 54 % of global data‑center capacity sits in heat‑stressed regions, potentially affecting 340 million people. Early adaptation of cooling, power and operational procedures can mitigate these risks.
