German defence committee chair Thomas Röwekamp says no swift Bundestag mandate for Hormuz naval mission

Thomas Röwekamp, the CDU chair of the German Bundestag’s defence committee, said a parliamentary mandate for a Bundeswehr deployment in the Strait of Hormuz is not expected in the near term. He noted that a deployment would require a clear legal basis, the consent of Iran and the confirmation that the presently fragile cease‑fire holds. "Wir haben im Moment viele Voraussetzungen, die noch nicht erfüllt sind," he told AFP.

France and the United Kingdom have proposed an international naval operation to keep the Hormuz corridor open, and Germany has positioned two warships in the area awaiting any decision. Röwekamp stressed that the necessary preconditions are still lacking, so a rapid German naval mission is unlikely.
