German Defense Minister Pistorius Faces Shortfall in Lithuanian Brigade Deployment

Defence Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) admitted that the German combat brigade intended for permanent stationing in Lithuania is far from fully staffed. The goal of about 5,000 troops has so far yielded only roughly 1,800 soldiers on the ground. To keep the NATO “Freedom Shield” exercise operational, units from Panzerbataillon 203 in Augustdorf and elements of Panzergrenadierbataillon 122 from Oberviechtach have been dispatched by rail to the Baltics.

Pistorius warned that, if voluntary enlistment remains insufficient, a compulsory service order could be issued. The deployment is seen as a deterrent on the vulnerable “Suwalki Gap,” the narrow corridor that Russia could target to strike the Baltic states. The minister’s remarks come amid broader domestic debates on defence readiness and security policy.
