German Defense Minister Pistorius flags recruitment shortfall on Bundeswehr Day

On June 6, 2026, Germany celebrated Bundeswehr Day at ten locations, including Weißenfels, the site of the army’s largest medical unit. Defence Minister Boris Pistorius used the occasion to urge a direct exchange between the public and the troops, showcasing the medical service and career opportunities. Attendance reached about 307,000 visitors, up from the previous year’s 280,000.

At the same time, the armed forces remain far below their target of 260,000 active personnel. Current figures show roughly 185,919 soldiers and 80,000 civilian staff. The new voluntary service model, launched earlier in the year, sent questionnaires to all 18‑year‑old men, achieving a 86‑90 % response rate, but only about half expressed interest in a six‑month stint. The ministry aims for 203,000 soldiers by next year and warns that failure to meet recruitment goals could revive conscription. Pistorius has faced criticism over procedural errors in the new law’s implementation.

The day therefore served both as a public outreach event and a reminder of the personnel challenges confronting the German Bundeswehr.
