Germany’s GdB 50 provides no additional statutory health‑insurance benefits
In Germany a degree of disability rating (GdB) of 50 does not automatically create extra entitlements with the statutory health‑insurance system. The law (§ 2a SGB V) obliges insurers to consider the special needs of disabled and chronically ill persons, but there is no separate benefit catalogue for a specific GdB level. Consequently, holders of a GdB 50 have no lower contributions, no preferential treatment in applications and no automatic supplemental services.
A limited exception exists for annual co‑payment caps under § 62 SGB V. Only persons classified as “severely chronically ill” – a status that requires, among other criteria, a GdB of at least 60 – may benefit from a reduced co‑payment ceiling of 1 % of gross income (instead of the usual 2 %). Another narrow provision (§ 9 SGB V) allows disabled persons to join the voluntary statutory scheme in transition situations, such as after loss of coverage. Additionally, children with disabilities can remain in family insurance without an age limit if they are unable to support themselves. These are the principal ways a GdB 50 can influence health‑insurance conditions.
