German E‑scooter safety concerns rise with recall and surge in accidents

Decathlon has issued a recall for several B’TWIN e‑scooter models in Germany after identifying a structural defect that could cause the frame‑steering connection to crack and increase the risk of falls. Owners are advised to stop using the scooters immediately and can obtain free repair kits through the company’s recall portal.

Separate data from the Federal Statistical Office show a sharp increase in e‑scooter incidents in Germany in 2025. Police recorded 16,496 crashes with personal injury, a 38 % rise over the previous year, and 38 fatalities. The majority of victims (82 %) were riding the scooter themselves, though 822 people were listed as passengers on the footboard, including one death. Young users under 25 accounted for more than half of the injured riders. The leading causes were improper road use, riding under the influence of alcohol, and excessive speed.
