German EV price gap narrows to 2,124 euros
The price gap between electric vehicles (EVs) and internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles in Germany has narrowed significantly. According to data from the Center Automotive Research (CAR), the average price difference between the 25 best-selling EVs and the 25 most popular ICE models fell to 2,124 euros in September, down from 2,249 euros in August.
This trend marks a major shift from previous years when EVs often commanded a premium of approximately 15,000 euros. The narrowing gap is largely driven by increased discounts on electric models, which averaged 17.9 percent in September, as manufacturers attempt to secure sales volumes through aggressive dealer incentives.
Consumer perspectives on the transition remain divided. While some highlight the advantages of lower running costs and home charging, many consumers argue that maintaining an existing ICE vehicle is more economical due to high initial purchase costs for EVs, potential battery depreciation, and the lack of charging infrastructure for renters. Additionally, data from vehicle recyclers suggests that the average lifespan before scrapping for EVs currently ranges between 10 and 12 years, compared to 18 to 25 years for combustion engines.
