Large Halde Fire Near Saalfeld, Germany Mobilises 100 Firefighters

In the early hours of Tuesday night, firefighters were dispatched to a major blaze at a scrap‑metal shredder waste heap near Saalfeld in the Saalfeld‑Rudolstadt district. Thick smoke prompted authorities to issue a population warning, advising residents to close windows and shut ventilation systems. About 100 emergency personnel from Saalfeld, Rudolstadt, Meura, Oberweißbach and Zeutsch responded with 24 fire engines, shovels and a water supply drawn from the Saale River. The fire was contained within the heap, and crews continued to dismantle the burning material to fully extinguish the blaze. No injuries were reported and the cause remains under investigation, with damage estimates pending.

The incident required a coordinated effort across multiple municipalities and highlighted the challenges of fighting fires involving large metal waste piles, where smoke and fumes pose health risks to nearby communities.
