German General Carsten Breuer elected NATO Military Committee chair

German General Carsten Breuer, the current inspector general of the Bundeswehr, has been elected as the next chair of the NATO Military Committee. Breuer was chosen by the chiefs of defense of the 32 NATO member states during the annual Military Committee conference held in Copenhagen.

Breuer is set to succeed Italian Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, with a three-year term beginning in the summer of 2027. As the chair of the Military Committee, Breuer will serve as the principal military advisor to NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and coordinate the alliance's collective military actions.

The election comes amid a period of increased European military spending and a focus on strengthening deterrence against Russia. Germany has significantly ramped up its defense budget, with current estimates placing its military spending at approximately €125 billion ($143 billion). The conference in Copenhagen also addressed critical alliance priorities, including technological innovation, support for Ukraine, and the transition of budgetary commitments into operational military capabilities.
