NATO Military Committee leadership transition

Overview

German General Carsten Breuer, the current Inspector General of the Bundeswehr, has been elected as the next chair of the NATO Military Committee. Selected by the chiefs of defense of the 32 NATO member states during an annual Military Committee conference in Copenhagen, Denmark, Breuer is set to succeed Italian Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone.

Breuer is scheduled to begin a three-year term in the summer of 2027. In this capacity, he will serve as the principal military adviser to NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and coordinate the alliance’s collective military actions, acting as a link between national military leaders and political decision-making bodies.

The election occurs during a period of increased European rearmament intended to deter Russia. The Copenhagen conference also addressed critical alliance priorities, including technological innovation, support for Ukraine, and the transition of budgetary commitments into operational military capabilities. Germany has emerged as a leader in this shift, with military spending currently at approximately €125 billion and goals to exceed €200 billion by 2030.
