German geoparks announce geological excursions and quarry tours

German geoparks are hosting various geological excursions and educational tours in September 2026.

In the GrenzWelten National Geopark, a series of six tours will take place between September 4 and September 6. Programs include visits to the Irma Oppermann gravel pit to observe extraction and processing machinery, as well as guided walks through the Winterscheid limestone domes to study soil formation and geological structures.

Additionally, the UNESCO Global Geopark Ries is celebrating its 20th anniversary as a national geopark with a geological excursion on September 19. Led by experts, the tour will visit active quarries, including sites operated by Bschor GmbH, Märker Zement GmbH, and Eireiner GmbH. The excursion aims to demonstrate the history of the Ries crater and the modern industrial use of its stones, sand, and gravel in construction and cement production.
