German government sets conditions for UniCredit's potential Commerzbank takeover

The German Federal Government is setting specific conditions regarding a potential takeover of Commerzbank by the Italian banking group UniCredit. The Federal Ministry of Finance emphasized that maintaining Commerzbank’s role in financing the German economy and the ‘Mittelstand’ (small and medium-sized enterprises) is a high priority.

Additionally, the government views Commerzbank as a vital employer and a central component of the Frankfurt financial hub. To discuss these positions, Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil has invited UniCredit CEO Andrea Orcel to a meeting in Berlin.

UniCredit has already secured access to nearly 50 percent of Commerzbank shares. The German government remains a significant stakeholder, holding approximately 12 percent of the bank following its rescue during the financial crisis. The government is also maintaining dialogues with Commerzbank management and the works council.
