German Greens urge ban proceedings against entire AfD

Irene Mihalic, the First Parliamentary Manager of the Alliance 90/The Greens parliamentary group, is calling for a ban procedure against the entire Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. Mihalic warned against distinguishing between specific regional branches or individual factions within the party, stating, “I see the danger that it will eventually become established that there is an unconstitutional part and a constitutional part of the AfD.”

Mihalic argued that the entire party is now “at odds with the democratic constitution,” citing an expert opinion from the Society for Civil Rights (Gesellschaft für Freiheitsrechte) as evidence. She identified minorities, people with migration backgrounds, non-heterosexual individuals, and political opponents as being particularly at risk from the party.

The Greens are actively lobbying other parliamentary groups in the Bundestag to initiate legal steps. While some officials, including Cem Özdemir and Boris Pistorius, have previously advocated for proceedings targeting specific extremist regional branches in states like Thuringia and Saxony, Mihalic maintains that the threat necessitates a comprehensive ban of the entire organization.
