German Health Funding Boosts Cancer Centers and Fungal Infection Research

The Deutsche Krebshilfe announced a 35.4 million‑euro allocation for the next four years to expand Germany’s Comprehensive Cancer Center (CCC) network. New sites in Kiel, Lübeck and Mannheim will join existing CCC consortia, aiming to provide guideline‑based, interdisciplinary care to roughly 250,000 cancer patients annually. Gerd Nettekoven, board member of the Deutsche Krebshilfe, said the goal is that all cancer patients in Germany benefit from the expertise of these top centres.

The Gemeinsamer Bundesausschuss (G‑BA) granted more than one million euros for a 30‑month research project called MYK‑IMPAKT, led by the University of Cologne and the University Hospital Cologne. The project will develop a new care concept for invasive fungal infections, which threaten immunocompromised patients such as transplant recipients and those undergoing intensive cancer treatment. Joybrato Mukherjee, rector of the University of Cologne, congratulated Professor Oliver Cornely and his team on receiving the funding.
