German health insurers suspect multi-billion euro billing fraud
The GKV-Spitzenverband, the central association of statutory health insurance funds in Germany, has commissioned a study to investigate the extent of undetected billing fraud within the healthcare system.
According to Martin Krasney, a board member of the association, the financial damages caused by misconduct could reach double-digit billions of euros. The association is basing these estimates on international research, such as studies from the United Kingdom, which suggest that fraud typically accounts for five to ten percent of total healthcare expenditures.
Given that annual statutory health insurance expenditures in Germany exceed 350 billion euros, the association estimates potential losses could surpass 20 billion euros. This initiative follows long-standing calls from state justice ministers and criminal police representatives for a comprehensive survey of the issue.
