German Health Minister Carsten Linnemann Faces Prevention Push and Care Reform Controversy
Andreas Gassen, head of the Kassenärztliche Bundesvereinigung, urged new Health Minister Carsten Linnemann to launch a fresh prevention programme. Gassen said Germany lags behind other countries in obesity, smoking and physical activity and called for stronger health education in kindergartens and schools and a reinforced public‑health service. He criticised the recent 20‑percentage‑point increase in taxes on tobacco and high‑strength alcohol as insufficient and revenue‑focused, arguing that a €5‑10 rise on a bottle of vodka and a €2 rise on a pack of cigarettes would be needed to curb consumption. Linnemann, who succeeded Nina Warken after she moved to the chancellor’s office, also inherited a draft care‑reform. The proposal would cut pension contributions for caregiving relatives to 70 % of current levels and postpone relief payments for nursing‑home residents, prompting sharp criticism from opposition parties, health economists and care‑advocates. Linnemann has said he will not “hit everyday heroes” – the caregiving relatives – but the reform remains under debate.
