German health sector sees physiotherapy expansion as MVZ finances come under strain

A new ambulatory physiotherapy centre, “PhysioGym”, opened in Möhnsee on 24 June 2026 under the leadership of Jörn Luley. The centre is part of a wider trend of specialised outpatient units across Germany, including orthopaedic‑technology hubs and MVZs adding services such as ambulatory hernia surgery. Industry experts say modular designs and clear documentation are key to scaling these centres and competing with digital‑first platforms.

At the same time, health ministers of the German states warned that many medical care centres (MVZ) face increasing economic pressure. Medical‑centre associations argue that the root problem lies in the broader financial framework for all outpatient practices, not the MVZ ownership model. They also criticised the proposed GKV savings law, warning it could cut tens of thousands of jobs, shorten opening hours and create supply gaps in primary and specialist care. Protests and calls for legislative revisions are intensifying.
