German healthcare providers face structural and financial crises

The German healthcare sector is facing significant structural and financial challenges, according to industry representatives and municipal reports.

The German Private Clinic Association (PKG) has called for urgent reforms to address what it describes as a failing system. PKG Managing Director Stefan Elmshäuser argued that the transition toward outpatient care is being hindered by outdated structures, insufficient investment, and a reimbursement system that favors inpatient services. The association is advocating for fair compensation for outpatient procedures, a clear legal framework for cross-sectoral care, and a reduction in bureaucracy.

Simultaneously, the municipal clinic group Geno in Bremen is facing a severe financial crisis. The group is projected to face a deficit of 20 million euros this year, with losses potentially reaching 130 million euros by 2028. To avoid insolvency, management is preparing a savings concept that includes reducing bed numbers, cutting agency work, and freezing new hires. Bremen Health Senator Claudia Bernhard attributed the deficit to federal austerity measures affecting statutory health insurance funds.
