German hospitals face expansion and closures amid healthcare shifts

German hospitals are experiencing divergent developments driven by infrastructure investments and national healthcare reforms.

Klinikum Kulmbach is investing 7.5 million euros of its own funds to expand its interim building into a permanent Outpatient Center. The project includes adding a new floor that will house two outpatient operating rooms, recovery areas, and rest rooms. This expansion aims to streamline the patient experience by allowing admission, surgery, and discharge to occur within a single building, potentially serving up to 6,000 patients annually.

In contrast, Klinikum Freising has announced the closure of its eight-bed lymphology department, effective December 31, 2026. Hospital management cited the federal hospital reform, which transitions inpatient care into standardized service groups, as the primary reason for the decision. The closure has drawn criticism from patients who rely on the intensive inpatient therapy for chronic conditions.
