German hospitals are undergoing significant structural changes involving insolvency resolutions, facility expansions, and departmental closures.

In early August 2026, insolvency proceedings for two facilities concluded with new operators taking control. The AMEOS Group assumed operational control of Klinikum Friedrichshafen on 1 August 2026 following payment difficulties caused by reduced subsidies. Additionally, the insolvency procedure for Ketteler-Krankenhaus in Offenbach was terminated on 3 August 2026, with the Red Cross set to operate the facility to ensure it becomes “long-term economically solid.”

Later in the month, developments highlighted a divergence between infrastructure investment and service reductions driven by national healthcare reforms. Klinikum Kulmbach announced a 7.5 million euro investment to expand its interim building into a permanent Outpatient Center. Conversely, Klinikum Freising announced the closure of its eight-bed lymphology department by the end of 2026, citing federal reforms that transition inpatient care into standardized service groups.
