German households narrow savings gap

According to an analysis by the Federal Association of German Cooperative Banks (BVR), people in Germany are moving closer to their personal savings goals. The gap between the amounts individuals consider necessary to save and the amounts they actually set aside has decreased by more than a quarter compared to the previous year.

Currently, Germans save an average of approximately 200 euros per month, while they estimate a need for about 275 euros to meet their goals. This results in a monthly savings gap of roughly 75 euros, down from over 100 euros in the prior year.

The savings rate, representing the portion of disposable income saved by private households, remains stable. The BVR expects a savings rate of 10.1 percent for 2026, with a slight increase projected for 2027. The report also notes that young people are engaging in regular saving habits.
