German household savings trends and disparities

Recent data indicates strong savings trends within Germany, though internal economic disparities exist. A Crédit Agricole study placed Germany at the top of the Savings Vitality Index with a score of 56, outperforming Italy, Spain, and France. German savers maintain high financial reserves and an average monthly savings capacity of 733 euros, exceeding the European average of 617 euros.

Regional analysis shows that saving capacity varies significantly across German states. Hessen is noted as the easiest region for saving due to high incomes and low fixed costs, whereas Berlin presents the greatest difficulty due to high real estate prices. In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Saxony, saving is hindered by low monthly salaries.

Further analysis by the Federal Association of German Cooperative Banks (BVR) shows that German households are narrowing the gap between their actual savings and their personal financial goals. This gap has decreased by more than a quarter compared to the previous year, with a current monthly shortfall of approximately 75 euros. The BVR projects a stable savings rate of 10.1 percent for 2026, with expectations of a slight increase in 2027.
