German Housing Support: KfW Low‑Interest Loans and Wohngeld for Interim Renters
The state‑owned development bank KfW offers a range of housing‑finance programmes, including the Wohneigentumsprogramm, that can provide borrowers with interest rates below one percent. Eligibility depends on the specific programme and may involve strict conditions, but when applicable the loans can significantly reduce financing costs for buying, building or renovating a home.
Separately, Germany’s Wohngeld benefit is also available to people living in a temporary (zwischen‑) rental arrangement. Applicants must present a valid interim lease and meet criteria regarding rent level, household income and composition. The local Wohngeld office verifies the information and may require additional proof such as bank statements. Approved claims can be paid retroactively and may take several months to process.
