German industry faces production shifts as costs rise

A Forsa survey commissioned by Handelsblatt reveals that approximately 21 percent of surveyed industrial companies are relocating production capacities abroad, with 11 percent dismantling entire production sites. Among large corporations with revenues exceeding 100 million euros, this figure rises to 31 percent.

Industry leaders cite high production costs, particularly regarding energy and wages, as the primary drivers for these shifts. Additionally, 42 percent of large companies are currently undergoing restructuring programs to improve economic efficiency. Christian Säuberlich, head of the restructuring consultancy FTI Andersch, noted that pressure on managing directors is at its highest level since the pandemic.

While the German mechanical and plant engineering sector shows signs of stabilization—with capacity utilization reaching 85.4 percent—the broader industrial outlook remains cautious. Although some companies expect slight growth, many anticipate a decline in overall industry revenue due to persistent cost pressures and economic uncertainty.
