Germany industrial employment falls by 496,000 since 2019

A study by the Ifo Institute reveals that Germany's industrial sector has seen a significant contraction, losing approximately 496,000 social security-liable jobs between 2019 and 2025. This represents a 7.1 percent decline in industrial employment.

The losses are concentrated in three core sectors: the automotive industry and its suppliers lost 123,500 jobs, metal product manufacturers lost 115,600, and mechanical engineering firms lost 64,500. These three areas account for roughly 60 percent of the total industrial job losses. Experts attribute this decline to decreased competitiveness and increased competition from China.

In contrast, the service sector experienced robust growth, creating more than 2.2 million new jobs during the same period. This expansion was primarily driven by demographic shifts and an aging population, leading to significant job gains in healthcare (391,000), social services (357,000), and public administration (329,000).
