German journalist reports surveillance by suspected Chinese spy in Taiwan

German journalist and author Jürgen Kremb reported being followed by a suspected Chinese female spy while vacationing in Alishan, Taiwan. Kremb, a visiting scholar at Soochow University, noted that the individual displayed professional surveillance tactics, including approaching him under pretense and later waiting near his colleagues at a hotel.

Taiwan's Investigation Bureau confirmed it has been investigating the case since last year. After reviewing surveillance footage, authorities verified that the woman, who was not a guest at the hotel, engaged in professional stalking by hiding behind vehicles and around street corners. The individual departed Taiwan two days after the investigation began.

The incident has raised concerns regarding transnational repression and the safety of foreign journalists. The Investigation Bureau stated that such actions demonstrate that targets of repression are not limited to Chinese or Taiwanese citizens, but can include anyone advocating for democracy, freedom, and human rights.
