More than 1,000 German jurists—including lawyers, judges and prosecutors—have signed an open letter demanding that the Bundestag, the federal government or the Bundesrat initiate a party‑ban procedure against the Alternative für Deutschland (AfD). The initiative is organised by the Republican Lawyers Association (RAV) and its chair Angela Furmaniak, who says the Basic Law provides an instrument that must now be used. The number of signatories rose from roughly 500 in July to 1,051 by early August.

The jurists base their demand on a legal report prepared by the Society for Civil Liberties (GFF), which concludes that the AfD’s policies violate the human‑dignity guarantee and the democratic principle of the German Basic Law. Under Article 21 § 2 of the Basic Law a party can be banned if it threatens the free democratic order, and a request for such a ban may be filed by the Bundestag, the Bundesrat or the federal government. Any decision would be made by the Federal Constitutional Court.

Political reaction is split: the SPD supports the call, while the Union parties oppose it. The AfD remains a major opposition force with 30‑40 % voter support, making the debate a significant domestic political issue.
